Puerto Morelos, Mexico, is a laid back fishing village and sea port in Quintana Roo, on the easternmost state on theYucatan Peninsula.  Historically, Puerto Morelos is one of the oldest communities on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, and has been the main port between the mainland of Yucatan and the Island of Cozumel. The town is located 20 miles south of Cancun, but with a much slower pace of life, and consists of a town square, a few stores, and restaurants. The village is known for its National Marine Park which is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and the second largest coral reef system in the world, which makes it very popular with divers and snorkelers. Puerto Morelos is a mix of locals and foreigners from all continents, and include artists, marine biologists, entrepreneurs, divers and fishermen. Resorts are abundant in the region with Cancun and Playa del Carmen nearby, but the local government works hard at protecting the village from over-development and protecting the barrier reef.

For the most part, the town is a residential community with a mix of Mexicans, Canadians, Americans, and Europeans who live there full or part time.  The neighborhoods are comprised of cabanas, low-rise condo-style hotels and modest homes. Prices range from the mid $100’s to oceanfront homes priced in the millions. 

What Is Special about Puerto morelos

A small, oceanfront community with turquoise water and white sandy beaches, along with a low cost of living, makes Puerto Morelos special.  It is also home to great fishing, scuba diving and water sports, and biking.  The Village is considered to be safe and walkable.

What Is Not Special about Puerto morelos

Puerto Morelos is small, and culturally doesn't offer much.  If you are not a beach or an outdoor person you may not enjoy it here. The closest hospital and medical care is 25 miles away in Cancun.

The average January temperature is 73 degrees, with July's average at 81 degrees. Puerto Morelos receives about 45 inches of rain annually.  Hurricane season lasts June through November.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos offers an easy going and quieter bohemian cluture. The main fishing pier and the leaning lighthouse are primary points of interest.  The lighthouse became tilted during Hurricane Beulah in 1967, and has become the symbol of Puerto Morelos; The National Marine Park and the barrier reef attracts marine biologists and divers from around the world; there are several seafood restaurants in Puerto Morelos, along with those serving authentic Mexican food, including The Little Mexican Cooking School, a popular restaurant where you can also learn to cook Mexican food during an all day cooking class; for sightseeing there is a crocodile and reptile zoo along with Botanical Gardens. Puerto Morelos also has a large used bookstore that is popular with tourists.

Crime

The crime rate in Puerto Morelos is low and its beaches are considerd some of the safest in Mexico.

Medical facilities

Puerto Morelos has a small clinic, but keeps traditional Mexican hours (closed for lunch and siestas ), so you may need to head to Cancun for medical attention.

Transportation

Getting around Puerto Morelos is easy as there are buses, and taxies, and you can walk and bike around the village.
